There was a major snow storm and a cold snap in Texas on February 6.
“This caused power and water outage,” says the svp at Samsung Foundry, Seung Hoon Han, “this caused us to stop the operation of our Austin fab. After the power and water supply was returned to normal, we started on restoring the operation. And as of March 31, we were able to achieve 90% level of production moving. And currently, the Austin fab is fully normalised. There was wafer production disruptions due to the stopping and the recovery of the fab about 71,000 wafers were affected.”
That represents a cost of between $270 million and $360 million.
H2 will see Samsung Foundry “continue our effort to strengthen our technological leadership by starting the development of the second generation three-nano process and completing the development of the 14 and 8-nano RF processes to actively lead the 5G market,” said Han.
In H2, “we will prepare to expand supply in the second half of the year through the start of mass production at Pyeongtaek Line 2,” said Han, “and we will reinforce our differentiated high performance heterogeneous integration technology package solutions by completing the development of the 2.5D interposer package and starting development of 5-nano based 3D IC packaging.”
